Travel Beauty Tips

It’s a well-known fact that flying is bad for your skin. Firstly, the low air pressure reduces circulation, which is key to a healthy glow and explains why we often step off a plane feeling like our skin is looking dull and lackluster. Secondly, the humidity in an aircraft cabin runs at around 20%, that’s a lot lower than our skin is used to and those low moisture levels can cause all sorts of problems. When the skin gets dehydrated it can become sensitive, itchy, flaky and red. Dehydrated skin can also cause excess oil production, leading to clogged pores, inflammation and breakouts. So here are my top travel beauty tips to help keep you feeling and looking your best.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to keep your skin happy at 35000 feet.

Travel Beauty Tip 1 – Prepare!

Exfoliate before you leave. Using a gentle exfoliator to slough away dead skin cells ensures your hydrating and moisturising products can really get to work in the air. Gentle exfoliation is key here, you don’t want to compromise your skin barrier before take off. Limelife by Alcone Skin polish is a good choice here, its natural jojoba beads gently rub off impurities and dead skin cells while squalene is a powerhouse hydrating ingredient which binds to water resulting in plump, hydrated skin. Leaving the mask to soak in for 10 minutes after you exfoliate will add much-needed moisture, leaving you glowing before take off.

Travel Beauty Tip 2 – Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Both are diauretics and will dehydrate your skin further. But if an aeroplane tipple is your thing, no worries. You are on holiday! Just make sure to hydrate well beforehand.

Travel Beauty Tip 3 – Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise.

Before your flight, mid-flight and whenever your skin feels tight. I recommend Skin Therapy, it’s packed with beneficial ingredients that will soothe your skin and help it retain more moisture, oats calm irritation and pomegranate sterols bind water within your skin making it plump and supple.

Travel Beauty Tip 4 – Keep stress levels to a minimum.

Sometimes this is easier said than done with queues, delays, crowds and in my case – 3 kids under 6 in tow. But it pays to take a minute to de-stress, whether that’s a stolen minute of meditation mid-flight in a rare moment of calm or listening to your favourite song. Take a minute, your skin will thank you for it.
